Weekend of 5/29

Up comes out this weekend!  So does Drag Me to Hell!  I’m so excited, I don’t know which emotional fulfillment will win out - pure giddiness or nightmarish, armrest gripping terror.  I’m pumped for both; Pixar has time and again proven its ability to produce incredible, visually stunning, mass-market movies while throwing the mass-market summer animated movie formula out the window, dousing it in gasoline, lighting it ablaze, gathering the ashes, placing them in a lead box, and firing that box into the sun.  Up looks to be the more of the same deliciousness, and I couldn’t be more excited back.

Well, let me take that back.  Drag Me to Hell marks the return of Sam Raimi to what he does best: sheer, white-knuckle, FUN terror.  He’s been digging a dark, guylinered, emoriffic grave for the idol of my youth for the past few years, but I have faith that he’s just been in the wrong genre.  As proof, watch Spider-Man 2, and pay special attention to the scene where Doctor Octopus wakes up after his Terrible Accident.  That, right there, is classic Sam Raimi, and he shouldn’t be allowed to do anything else in film.  If not to prevent him from diluting his genius, then to keep him from making a disaster of certain bloggers’ favorite superheroes.  (Say what you will about Spider-Man 1 & 2, Spider-Man 3 sucked.)  …I’ll be honest, I’m watching this movie out of both anticipation and spite.  It’s weird.

Enough rambling.  I’m going to have a real tough time deciding on one movie to see this weekend, so I’m not going to make any predictions.  I will say that last weekend I did make it out to see Terminator, but not Outrage.  Instead, I caught Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience.  Reviews for both of those up soon.

Anyway! Get excited! Up and Drag Me To Hell! This weekend! Go!
