I got to do a lot of things during my time at CollegeHumor. Some things I’m immensely proud of, some I did for money that I’d rather not publicly discuss. When I first learned that I would be interning there in my final semester, I put together a list of CH-related secrets I wanted to discover the answer to- among them, Are the Prank Wars real? Is Amir really that much of a low-functioning human being? and How awesome is it to play Rock Band while drinking beer and eating pizza in the CH offices?. The answers- I won’t tell you but think of the terrible things they’ve done to each other if they are (really, think about that); nope, that’s a really, really funny character; totally awesome and even more awesome if Sam Reich is singing lead.

But there was one secret I never learned the answer to, that has lurked in the space between dream and reality and never let me be at peace. WHAT makes the “HUH!” sound at the end of each CH Original? I have never heard a human even remotely recreate that sound, it has to be mechanical or computerized. I heard a number of explanations- it’s the sound a character makes in Street Fighter, it’s something they picked up off of ambient noise in between takes- but nothing with anything real to back it up. I’ve since abadoned my search, and I’m glad to see CH give this important part of their mythos its due respect as it floats on into the ether.

So long, “HUH!” sound.
