Sony continues to stand over my childhood and unleash hell all over it.
/Film reports that Sam Raimi’s looking to use Morbius, an old Spidey villain that hasn’t even been mentioned in the past decade, and the Lizard/Dr. Curt Conners in Spider Man 4. The Lizard, I’m excited about. He’s a very layered character, a tortured split personality, and plays a sizeable part in the Spiderman drama. Part scientist working for the greater good, part pyschopathic monster. There are themes of mercy and intervention- Spiderman has to defeat his enemy and save his friend at the same time. Point is- The Lizard is a great villain to use, and I’ve been hoping they’d use him for some time.
But Morbius- he’s a damn vampire! There are just so many better villains to use. The last movie just barely touched on Venom, one of Spiderman’s biggest, deadliest, most personal and complex villains of the past twenty years. There are a host of themes to explore there- revenge, vigilantism, justice, identity. They could do an entire movie just on what they didn’t touch on with Venom. Or, going in another direction, the last movie left an easy segueway (spelling?) into Carnage- the symbiote only separated from Eddie Brock, it didn’t die. Perhaps part of it split away from its main self, formed its own mind, went crazy, and became Carnage. Now Spidey and Venom have to team up to fight it- Sony, you should be paying me for this, it’s GOLD. I’m going to stop here, but my point stands. These are just two of the many, many villains they could use next, instead of cashing in on the Twilight-induced vampire craze currently running rampant through teengirldom.
This, along with Spiderman ON BROADWAY, is breaking my heart. I know, I know Sony, you say you love me, but I can’t keep doing this. I give you so many chances, and you just keep letting me down. I have to protect myself, I have to move on-
Who the hell am I kidding? I’ll see this at midnight.
PS- I just read that they’re developing a Venom spin-off movie. Nice, but still, I think they could do so much better with the next movie than Morbius. And Venom’s great, but he’s nothing without Spiderman. Spidey’s the reason he has any powers, and the main cause of his conflict- aside from the fact that he wants to kill Spiderman, Venom is actually a good guy. I think he’d be better served as the main villain in a Spiderman movie, but it’s nice to see that Hollywood recognizes the story behind him.
