A 100% not-even-a-little-bit-objective film review of The Avengers:

New piece up at The Inclusive, in which I completely freak out about how awesome The Avengers was and completely fail at writing an objective film review. Preview below, the rest at the site.

By now, I’ve seen The Avengers twice. I saw it first at its midnight release with my Speech Bubbleco-host, Adam Dello Buono, Inclusive Fearless Leader Mike Anton, and a gaggle of other assorted nerd friends. We screamed (Adam and I especially). We cried (Anton especially). We dressed up. We were shushed a number of times. I went again this past weekend and saw it a second time, in IMAX 3D, and it was still more fun than a barrel of Hulks.

Spoilers, y’all.

First of all, all due credit must be paid to Joss Whedon, for stepping up to the plate so hugely and completely, and knocking this sucker out of the park so spectacularly. By every external measure, this movie has been every kind of commercial and critical success. Audiences – both mainstream and nerd – love it, critics love it, and the studios love it. A cousin recently told me she wasn’t aware The Avengers was supposed to be a comedy, but was pleasantly surprised to find herself laughing throughout. Internally, that is the brilliance of Joss Whedon. The far-out, ensemble piece concept movie played with humor and mass appeal. We saw the story from every character’s viewpoint. There was no “main character” as each was fully and totally realized, a feat few mainstream summer blockbusters pull off. We got to see inside each Avenger’s head without sacrificing time or focus from the other main players.

The actors in turn deserve fair praise, as well. Robert Downey, Jr. disappointed no one as the unflappable Tony Stark, played with a precision like he just stepped off the Iron Man 2 set. And we got to see a side of Tony Stark that has been hinted at in…

My brief experience with the Trenton nightlife scene:

Another charming tale of alarming stupidity up at The Inclusive today. You think my flatulent brush with the law was stupid? Or when I insulted a biker to his face? You have no idea just how stupid I can be.

My previous charming stories of alarming stupidity have had one thing in common: the degree of imminent threat to my continued corporeal well-being was low enough to allow the stories to be charming rather than terrifying. My dad’s car’s window got nicked up, six squad cars were dispatched to deal with some bad gas when they could have been writing traffic tickets, but other than that, there was very little chance that I or anyone else involved could have been injured, maimed, stabbed, kidnapped, or murdered. This next tale deviates a bit from that standard, as were it not for the intrepid and quick actions of Trenton’s Finest, I would most likely not be alive to tell this story today.

An Incredibly Sexist Guide to The Avengers:

OOPS. Silly me. I forgot to whine the whole time that Boyfriend was making me see the stupid superhero movie.

Also, even if you didn’t see any of the other movies, the Avengers is NOT THAT HARD TO FOLLOW. You don’t need a guide. Especially not this one, which doesn’t tell you any more than the roll call preview they’ve shown on tv for the last month.

Additionally, this article tries to force a relationship on poor Hawkeye and Black Widow, uses words like “totes” and “oopsie,” and in general, pissed me off. Yes, some girls don’t read comics, etc. However, they can still be “actual people with varied interests.” I don’t care about sports. Does that make me a girly-girl too stupid to understand them?

The article thinks it’s funny satire. It’s not. It’s another reason why nerd girls get mad. Fortunately, the comments thus far are all pretty angry and vitriolic. We’re still here. We’re still fighting.

(Also- this guide acts like Natalie Portman is in the movie. She’s really not. So any girl who does take this to heart will end up more confused than she would’ve without this)
