They say the “news voice” is fake, that anchors and reporters put it on when they’re on camera, and their normal, everyday voice is entirely different. I’ll say this about Scott Pelley: his real life voice is different than his news voice, in that his real life voice is too beautiful for the studio microphones to fully capture. It is a saccharine melody of bold tones and a deep timbre, a song sung through your ears straight to your very soul. It is completely impossible to replicate with modern communications technologies. It is what warm, weathered wood sounds like. What you hear coming from your television speakers every weeknight at 6:30 isn’t him putting on a more impressive tenor, it’s him watering down his voice in an attempt to not destroy your Samsung.
